Thom Browne -- I never would have guessed.
When Michelle Obama arrived for services at St. John's Church in Washington, the fashion world was abuzz with talk of her outfit. The first lady wore a navy Thom Browne coat, nipped in at the waist and with a flared skirt. The fabric is reminiscent of a man's tie.
Fitting, since Browne is an American designer best known for menswear; his signature is the shrunken suit, slim cut with shortened sleeves and ankle-length pants that make it seem the wearer has chosen a size that's slightly too small. If that sounds critical, it isn't. I love Browne's stuff, including his exquisitely constructed (and often fanciful) women's collection.
As she often does, Obama mixed high-end and mid-price pieces, accessorizing with a J. Crew belt and shoes. First daughter Malia also wore J. Crew, while Sasha sported Kate Spade.
Of course, this is only the first conversation fashionistas will be having today. The big question: Who will Michelle Obama wear to the Inaugural Balls?
