In the fashion and beauty world, some things enjoy iconic status: the Burberry trench coat; red-lacquer soled Louboutin heels; even Maybelline Great Lash Mascara in its signature pink and green packaging. Add the little black dress to that list, and perhaps Louis Vuitton's Speedy bag.
These classics are almost untouchable. Saying you dislike one of them is guaranteed to raise at least a few well-groomed eyebrows.
So, I'll get to it: I hate the scent of Chanel No. 5. Why am I so reluctant to admit this? I guess it's because it's probably the most famous fragrance ever made. Even the bottle is iconic.
The other day, I thought I'd give Coco's concoction one last chance. I walked over to Sephora in the Providence Place mall (our office is right across the street -- both a blessing and a curse) and splashed some on my wrist, waiting for an epiphany.
None was to be had. It smelled, as it always has to me, like baby powder and a granny's closet.
