I'm a firm believer in the power of a cheap thrill.
One of my new favorite places to get a fix is Providence's Domaine Designs. It's an outlet run by Domaine Ltd., a fashion jewelry wholesaler that imports baubles from overseas and sells them to department stores, catalogs and mall brands.
The samples and overruns end up at Domaine Ltd., where there sold at ridiculously low prices. Nearly everything in the store costs less than $20, and you can pick up a cocktail ring for $5, bracelet for $6 and necklace for $10.
Visiting is a bit like a treasure hunt. Be prepared to dig around; styles suited for grandma are mixed in with wilder designs an 18 year-old might wear to a club.
You'll also want to grab what you like as soon as you see it because there's typically only one of any given item.
So, bring your friends -- there's little chance that you'll find yourselves at the register with the same necklace.
Domaine Designs, 18 Imperial Place, Providence, is open Wednesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m.-4 p.m.
